Router vs Modem: What's the Difference?
When setting up a home or office network, many people use the terms router and modem interchangeably. While they work together, they perform very different jobs.

What Is a Modem?
A modem is the device that connects your home or business to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Depending on your connection, it communicates with your fibre, DSL, or cable service and provides internet access to your network.
Without a modem (or an Optical Network Terminal for many fibre connections), your devices cannot reach the internet.
What Is a Router?
A router takes the internet connection from your modem or fibre ONT and shares it with all of your devices.
It creates your home or office network, allowing devices such as laptops, smartphones, smart TVs, printers, and gaming consoles to communicate with each other and access the internet.
Most modern routers also provide:
- WiFi connectivity
- Network security
- Guest WiFi
- Parental controls
- Device management
Do Fibre Connections Use a Modem?
Many fibre installations use an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) instead of a traditional modem.
The ONT converts the fibre signal into an Ethernet connection, and your router distributes that connection throughout your home or office.

Can You Have a Router Without a Modem?
No.
A router needs an internet source, which usually comes from a modem or fibre ONT.
Without that connection, the router can still create a local network between devices, but it won't provide internet access.
Can You Connect Devices Directly to a Modem?
Technically yes, but it's not recommended.
Without a router:
- Only a limited number of devices can connect.
- You lose WiFi functionality.
- Security features are reduced.
- Network management becomes more difficult.
